Our Mission
The Fund’s mission is to aid financially disadvantaged families who require assistance in caring for their son, daughter, father, brother, mother or sister who have suffered injuries or financial hardship as a direct result of participation in youth football. The family may be devoid of health insurance coverage or may require additional funds to cope with the financial hardship. The Fund will assist those involved in Youth Football, defined as Pop Warner through Prep high school. This includes players, cheerleaders, coaches, officials and friends of youth football.
Our History
In November 1998, the San Diego County Football Officials Association began raising funds to assist several injured high school football players. From that first fund raising, the San Diego Youth Football Fund was born. Over the past four years, the Fund has provided financial assistance to the families of injured or disadvantaged youth football participants. Our primary objective is to provide families with a place to turn when they are in need of financial support.
Each year over 10,000 local area youth (players and cheerleaders) participate in organized youth football. These youngsters participate in Pop Warner through High School Prep football. In addition, hundreds of adults provide leadership to these local youths as coaches and role models.
The Fund has provided financial assistance to players, coaches and officials that did not have sufficient health insurance coverage to protect them in their time of need. In most cases, the injury was so serious that the primary health insurance did not provide coverage for items such as crutches, wheel chairs, physical therapy rehabilitation, and transportation.
Since 1998, the Fund and the San Diego County Football Officials have provided thousands of dollars in financial assistance to numerous players, coaches, and officials. The Fund awards grants based upon financial need as our funding permits. Every football season, the financial needs of the youth football community out-pace our available funding.
Beginning in 2011, the FUND has established the “KICKOFF” scholarship to be awarded to a deserving high school senior scholar/athlete. See our College Scholarships page for details and application form.
